two million people, one street party, all free
Free to attend · Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove · Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August 2026
Everything you actually need to do Notting Hill Carnival 2026 right. Which day is which, the nearest open tube, where to stand, how to get home and what to bring. Around two million people, the best jerk chicken of the year, and the loudest street party in Europe.
What is Notting Hill Carnival?
Europe's biggest street party and the second largest carnival in the world. Two days of mas bands in full costume, steel pan, soca and Caribbean food, all free, on the streets of west London. It has run on the August bank holiday since 1966 and is led by London's Caribbean community.
Notting Hill Carnival 2026 dates: which day is which
- Saturday 29 August — Panorama (ticketed): the UK National Panorama steel band competition. Ticketed and separate from the free street days.
- Sunday 30 August — Children's and Family Day: the calmer day, with the children's parade and J'Ouvert at dawn. Best with kids. Around 10am to 7pm.
- Monday 31 August — main adults parade: the big one and the busiest. J'Ouvert from about 6am, parade roughly 10:30am to 8:30pm.
What time does it start and finish?
J'Ouvert starts around 6am on Monday. The main parade runs roughly 10:30am to 8:30pm. Sound systems play noon to 7pm on both Sunday and Monday, then there is a 7pm music curfew.
Is Notting Hill Carnival free?
Yes, it is free to attend. You only pay for food and drink, for Saturday's Panorama, and for an optional ticketed grandstand seat in the judging zone.
Getting there: the nearest open tube station
The golden rule is do not aim for Ladbroke Grove. TfL's advice is to take the Tube or Elizabeth line to Paddington, then follow the signed walking route, about 20 minutes. Avoid the Central line straight to Notting Hill Gate.
- Use these (open): Paddington (recommended way in), Shepherd's Bush, Westbourne Park (often exit-only), Royal Oak (often exit-only).
- Closed or exit-only: Ladbroke Grove closed all day both days. Notting Hill Gate no entry roughly 11am to 6pm. Holland Park closed from about 6pm. Latimer Road closed from around 11:30pm.
Do not drive. Roads are closed from about 6am Sunday to 6am Tuesday and there is no parking.
How to get home after Notting Hill Carnival
Leave before the 7pm curfew if you can. The closest stations are exit-only or close early and back up fast, so the reliable plan is to walk back to Paddington. Agree your meeting point before phone signal drops.
The best place to watch
- Great Western Road judging zone: peak costumes and energy, with a ticketed grandstand option.
- Ladbroke Grove: the lively main hub. Stand on the east side of the road.
- Meanwhile Gardens and Powis Square: quieter pockets for families.
What to bring
Comfortable closed-toe shoes, water, cash (lots of stalls are cash only and signal drops), sun cream and a light waterproof, a charged phone and a meeting point. Do not bring flashy valuables, a drone (banned), or a car.
Staying safe
Carnival is heavily stewarded and policed. Agree a meeting point in advance. If you are with kids, write your number on their arm and photograph them on the way in. There are first aid, welfare and lost-person points across the site.
