Bexhill and the De La Warr Pavilion
free art in a seaside icon
A free modernist gallery right on the seafront. The De La Warr Pavilion is a 1935 icon and its art shows cost nothing.
Free day out · Bexhill-on-Sea · East Sussex · Victoria or Charing Cross → Bexhill
The De La Warr Pavilion is one of Britain's great modernist buildings, a sweeping 1935 seaside palace of light and curves, and walking in to see its contemporary art is free. The famous spiral staircase and the sun terrace over the Channel are reason enough.
Around it Bexhill gives you a quiet free seafront to stroll, far calmer than its brasher neighbours. Pair the gallery with a walk along the prom and a sit on the beach for an easy free day by the sea.
Getting there from London: Victoria or Charing Cross to Bexhill, around 1h40 (change), advance singles, book ahead. The De La Warr Pavilion and its galleries are free, and so is the seafront. Only the train costs.
Getting there: Bexhill station is a five minute walk to the seafront and the Pavilion, which sits right on the prom.
Best time to go: Any day the galleries are open, then a walk along the prom. Check the Pavilion's exhibition dates before you go.
