Borough Market
london's pantry, free to wander
London's best food market under the railway arches. Free to wander, and the samples are generous if you look interested.

Opening: Tue–Sat, full market · check days before you go
Borough Market has fed London for a thousand years give or take, and it sits in a tangle of Victorian iron and glass tucked under the railway by London Bridge. Walking in costs nothing, and you could happily lose an hour just looking.
It is a working food market first and a tourist sight second, so come hungry and come curious. The traders hand out samples, cheese, charcuterie, oils, brownies, and if you look genuinely interested rather than just grazing you will usually be offered more. A slow lap with a coffee is a cracking free morning.
The hot food stalls are not free, but they are some of the best cheap eats in the city, so if you are going to spend anywhere spend here. Dodge the lunchtime rush if you actually want room to move.
Getting there: Two minutes from London Bridge station, just south of the river by Southwark Cathedral.
Best time to go: Mid-morning on a weekday. Saturdays are brilliant but rammed, and the full market is closed Sundays and Mondays.
Insider tip: Come before noon on a Thursday or Friday. The full market is open, the traders are fresh and at their most generous with samples, and you can get near the stalls before the lunch crowd lands.
