Brixton Village and the neighbouring Market Row are two covered Victorian shopping arcades that together form the beating heart of Brixton. Free to wander, they are a tight warren of independent restaurants, Caribbean grocers, fabric shops, butchers and bars under arched glass roofs.
This is the home of Brixton's Afro-Caribbean community and the food reflects it, alongside a wave of independent kitchens from across the world that turned the arcades into one of London's most exciting eating destinations. Spices, plantain, fresh fish and a dozen cuisines compete for your attention in a few narrow lanes.
It is loud, colourful and unmistakably local, more neighbourhood than tourist trap, and that is the appeal. Walking through costs nothing, and even if you do not eat, the sights and smells of the grocers and kitchens are a free experience in themselves.
Getting there: A minute from Brixton station and the market street outside, in the covered arcades just off Atlantic Road.
Best time to go: An evening for the buzz of the kitchens, or a weekend daytime for the full mix of food, grocers and shops.
Insider tip: Come hungry in the early evening when the kitchens are at their liveliest. Eating at the tiny shared tables in the arcades is the whole point, but a slow wander past the Caribbean grocers and fishmongers of Market Row is free and just as much a part of Brixton.
