Cambridge on foot
a free fitzwilliam + the backs
A free world-famous museum, the Backs and punts you watch rather than pay for. A college town you can do for nothing.
Free to visit · Cambridge · Cambridgeshire · King's Cross → Cambridge · CB2 1RB
Cambridge is built to be walked. Stroll the Backs along the river behind the colleges, cross the little bridges and watch the punts go by without paying for one yourself.
Duck into the Fitzwilliam Museum, a free treasure house of paintings, antiquities and armour that would charge a fortune anywhere else. Wander King's Parade, the market square and the old courts and you have done one of England's great cities for the price of the train and a sandwich.
Getting there from London: King's Cross to Cambridge, 1h10 (faster trains around 50 min), advance singles from £12 each way. The Backs, the streets and the Fitzwilliam are free. Trains run from King's Cross and Liverpool Street, so book advance on whichever suits.
Getting there: It is a twenty minute walk or a quick bus from Cambridge station into the centre. Aim for King's Parade.
Best time to go: Out of term the colleges are quieter and the courts are easier to peek into. The views along the river are free whenever you come.
