Opening: Always open
Clapham Common is less a park than a vast open green that the whole of south London treats as its shared back garden. Two hundred and twenty acres of mostly flat grass, ringed by busy roads and grand Victorian houses, it has no fences and no gates, just space.
At the heart of it stands one of the oldest and largest bandstands in the country, beautifully restored, and there are three ponds used by anglers, model-boat sailors and the odd brave wild swimmer. A cafe, a paddling pool and sports pitches keep it busy year round.
It is a proper social space rather than a beauty spot, and that is the charm. On the first warm weekend of the year it fills with picnics, football, frisbees and barbecues, a free and slightly chaotic celebration of a city let off the leash.
Getting there: Clapham Common station sits right on it, with Clapham South and Clapham North a short walk from the other corners.
Best time to go: A summer weekend when the whole common is out picnicking, or a crisp autumn morning for the runners and the dog walkers.
Insider tip: Head for the bandstand on a summer evening. There are often free concerts and informal gatherings, the light across the open grass is lovely, and it is the natural meeting point in a common big enough to lose your friends in.
