David Bowie Graffiti Mural
ziggy watches over brixton
A striking Aladdin Sane tribute mural in Brixton that became a spontaneous shrine the day Bowie died, near his birthplace.
Free to visit · Brixton · Brixton · SW9 8LF
Opening: Viewable any time
On a wall beside Brixton Underground station, a few streets from where David Bowie was born, glows a vivid mural of the star in his Aladdin Sane guise, lightning bolt across his face. Painted in 2013 by the artist James Cochran, it became an instant landmark, and on the day Bowie died in January 2016 thousands gathered here, turning the pavement into a sea of flowers, candles and messages.
It remains a place of pilgrimage, protected and lovingly maintained, with fresh tributes appearing every anniversary. It is free to visit, a moving and joyful tribute to Brixton's most famous son, right in the heart of the neighbourhood that shaped him.
Getting there: On Tunstall Road beside Morleys, a minute from Brixton station.
Best time to go: Any time, though it draws crowds and flowers each January on his anniversary.
Insider tip: It is on Tunstall Road right by the station, often with flowers and notes left at its base. Visit around his birthday on 8 January or the anniversary of his death to see the spontaneous shrine at its fullest.
