Dover's white cliffs
the famous cliffs, for free
The white cliffs you have seen a hundred times, free to walk. A clifftop path high above the busiest sea crossing in the world, with France on the horizon.
Free day out · Dover · Kent · St Pancras → Dover Priory
The White Cliffs of Dover are free to walk and worth the trip on their own. The National Trust clifftop path runs east from the town high above the ferry port, the Channel spread out below and France on the horizon on a clear day.
Down in the town the seafront and the harbour walls are free to wander, and Dover Castle looms over it all from the hill, though that one is ticketed. Bring a picnic, walk the cliffs out towards the South Foreland lighthouse and back, and you have a full free day by the sea.
Getting there from London: St Pancras to Dover Priory, 1h high speed, advance singles, book ahead. The cliffs, the seafront and the harbour walls are free. The castle is ticketed. Book the high-speed advance and the day stays cheap.
Getting there: Dover Priory station is a fifteen minute walk to the seafront. For the cliffs head east along the front or take the short bus up to the National Trust visitor centre.
Best time to go: A bright clear day so the chalk glows and you can see France. Wear proper shoes for the clifftop path.
