General Wolfe Viewpoint
the postcard view of greenwich
The classic free view over London, from the statue of General Wolfe beside the Royal Observatory, looking down across maritime Greenwich to the river and Canary Wharf.
Free to visit · Greenwich · Cutty Sark (DLR) · SE10 8XJ
Opening: Daily · dawn to dusk
At the top of the hill in Greenwich Park, beside the Royal Observatory, stands a statue of General James Wolfe, the soldier who took Quebec, gazing out over London. The terrace around him is the spot everyone climbs the hill for, and the view is completely free.
Laid out below is one of the great London panoramas, the elegant baroque buildings of the Old Royal Naval College and the Queen's House in the foreground, the masts of the Cutty Sark, the curve of the river, and the towers of Canary Wharf and the City rising beyond.
While the Observatory buildings and the meridian courtyard are ticketed, this viewpoint and the park around it are free, and the view is arguably better from out here anyway. A free climb that delivers one of the best skyline rewards in the city.
Getting there: A climb up the hill in Greenwich Park from Cutty Sark DLR, the statue stands by the Royal Observatory at the top.
Best time to go: Late afternoon for the light down the river, or a clear evening for the lights of Canary Wharf coming on.
Insider tip: You do not need an Observatory ticket for the best of it, the free terrace by the Wolfe statue gives you the whole panorama. Come towards dusk to watch Canary Wharf and the City light up across the river.
