I Goat
a goat on a pile of crates
A balancing goat perched on a tower of crates in Spitalfields, honouring the waves of migrants who shaped the area.
Free to visit · Spitalfields · Liverpool Street · E1 6AB
Opening: Always open
In a square beside Spitalfields Market stands a striking bronze sculpture by Kenny Hunter of a goat balanced calmly on top of a tall stack of packing crates. Titled I Goat, it was chosen by local people and nods to the area's long history as a place of arrival, where wave after wave of migrants, from Huguenots to Bengalis, brought new trades and life.
The goat, a hardy animal that thrives anywhere and was often kept by newcomers, becomes a gentle symbol of resilience and belonging. It is free to see, thoughtful and a little surreal, a fitting modern landmark for one of London's most diverse and historic quarters.
Getting there: In Bishops Square by Spitalfields Market, a couple of minutes from Liverpool Street.
Best time to go: Any time, on a walk around Spitalfields Market.
Insider tip: It stands in Bishops Square right by the market, so combine it with a free wander round Old Spitalfields. The crates it balances on are a nod to the area's centuries of trade and migration.
