The Seven Sisters are the run of brilliant white chalk cliffs that stand in for the more famous Dover in half the postcards. The clifftop walk over the rolling cliffs between Seaford and Eastbourne is one of the great free days out from London.
There is nothing to pay. Cuckmere Haven, the meandering river and the coastguard cottages below the cliffs are all open and free, and the whole South Downs stretches behind you. Pack water and lunch because once you are up there it is just you and the sea.
Getting there from London: Victoria to Seaford or Eastbourne, around 1h30, advance singles from £15 each way. The cliffs and the whole coast path are free. You only pay for the train and a local bus to the start.
Getting there: From Eastbourne or Seaford a local bus drops you at the country park, then it is your own two feet along the clifftop. Wear proper shoes.
Best time to go: A clear bright day for the colours, and keep well back from the edge in wind. Late light turns the chalk gold.
