'Treatment Rooms' Mosaic House
a whole house made of mosaic
A suburban house in Chiswick covered head to toe in dazzling handmade mosaics and political ceramics by artist Carrie Reichardt.
Free to visit · Chiswick · Turnham Green · W4 5EN
Opening: Exterior viewable any time
On an otherwise ordinary Chiswick street stands an extraordinary sight, a whole house, walls and all, smothered in vibrant handmade mosaics and ceramic tiles. The work of the artist and activist Carrie Reichardt, who calls it the Treatment Rooms, it has taken decades to create and is crammed with colour, slogans and political messages on justice and human rights.
It is a private home, so you admire it from the pavement, but the riot of pattern and protest is free to see and utterly mesmerising. A genuinely unique piece of outsider art hiding in suburban west London, well worth the detour for anyone who loves the unexpected.
Getting there: On Fairlawn Grove in Chiswick, a short walk from Turnham Green station.
Best time to go: A bright day to catch the colours, on a residential Chiswick side street.
Insider tip: It is a private house, so view it respectfully from the street and keep the noise down for the neighbours. Look closely at the tiles for the political slogans and tributes woven into the patterns.
