Walthamstow Market
a full kilometre of market, for free
The longest outdoor street market in Europe, a full kilometre of stalls in east London, free to walk end to end.
Free to visit · Walthamstow · Walthamstow Central · E17 7JN
Opening: Tue–Sat, roughly 9am–5pm
Walthamstow market holds a genuine record as the longest outdoor street market in Europe, running for very nearly a full kilometre straight down the High Street. Walking the whole thing is free, and it is a proper everyday London market rather than a curated one.
Hundreds of stalls sell fruit and veg, fabric, household bits, phone cases and cheap clothes, with old-school traders shouting their prices over each other. It is busy, unpretentious and a brilliant slice of east London life, and you can browse the entire length without spending anything.
At the far end you reach Walthamstow Village and the pretty old centre, and the area has the famous God's Own Junkyard neon warehouse nearby too, so a free market stroll easily turns into a fuller day out.
Getting there: Right outside Walthamstow Central station on the Victoria line and Overground.
Best time to go: A Saturday when the market runs at full length and full volume.
Insider tip: Walk the full length, it really is a kilometre, and you will end up near Walthamstow Village and the old almshouses. Saturday is the biggest day, with the most stalls and the best atmosphere.
