West Norwood Cemetery
a victorian necropolis on a hill
A hilly, atmospheric Magnificent Seven cemetery in south London, free, famous for its grand Greek mausolea and the graves of Mrs Beeton and a string of Victorian inventors.
Free to visit · West Norwood · West Norwood · SE27 9JU
Opening: Daily · 8am to dusk
West Norwood is one of the Magnificent Seven, the great ring of Victorian cemeteries built around London, and it climbs a steep hill, which gives it drama and long views the flatter ones lack. It is free to wander, a forest of leaning monuments, ivy and grand tombs.
Its showpiece is the Greek Orthodox necropolis near the top, a cluster of opulent mausolea built by wealthy Greek merchant families, some of the finest funerary architecture in the country. The cemetery is dotted with elaborate Gothic tombs and crumbling angels.
The names are a roll-call of Victorian achievement, Isabella Beeton of cookery-book fame, the engineer Sir Henry Tate of the sugar and the galleries, and inventors and industrialists by the dozen. A free, melancholy and beautiful walk through the age that built modern Britain.
Getting there: A short walk from West Norwood station in south London.
Best time to go: A weekday for quiet, or join one of the free volunteer-led tours run by the Friends of West Norwood Cemetery.
Insider tip: Climb to the Greek necropolis at the top of the hill for the grandest mausolea and the views, and catch one of the free Friends-led tours if the timing works, as they unlock the history grave by grave.
