White Cube Bermondsey
blue-chip art, zero entry fee
One of Europe's largest commercial galleries, free to enter, showing ambitious work by some of the world's biggest contemporary artists.
Free to visit · Bermondsey · London Bridge · SE1 3TQ
Opening: Tue–Sat · check exhibition dates
White Cube's Bermondsey gallery is enormous, one of the largest commercial art spaces in Europe, and like nearly all commercial galleries it is completely free to walk into. Behind its plain frontage on Bermondsey Street lie vast white halls that show major exhibitions by some of the most famous names in contemporary art.
Because it is a selling gallery rather than a museum, the shows change regularly and there is never a ticket or a queue, just serious, ambitious art in beautifully lit rooms. It anchors a whole cluster of free galleries and design shops along Bermondsey Street, making the area one of the best free art wanders south of the river.
Getting there: On Bermondsey Street, a short walk from London Bridge or Borough stations.
Best time to go: A weekday afternoon between exhibitions changeovers, when it is calm.
Insider tip: Commercial galleries like this are always free and rarely busy, so do not be shy about walking in. Check what is on before you go, as the huge South Galleries are only open during exhibitions, and explore the rest of Bermondsey Street while you are there.
