Free to visit · Whitstable · Kent · Victoria → Whitstable · CT5 1AB
Whitstable is a working oyster town that never stopped being one. The harbour still lands its catch, the beach is all shingle and colourful huts and the whole front is free to wander.
The real reason to come is the sunset. The beach faces west across the Thames Estuary and the sky puts on a show most evenings. Find a spot on the shingle, watch the boats come in and you will see why people make the trip just for the last hour of light.
Getting there from London: Victoria to Whitstable, 1h20, advance singles from £12 each way. The harbour, the beach and the sunset are free. The high-speed from St Pancras is quicker, the Victoria line is cheaper.
Getting there: Whitstable station is a flat ten minute walk to the harbour. Head down the high street towards the sea.
Best time to go: Go for golden hour. The west-facing beach gives Whitstable its famous sunset, so check what time the sun drops and arrive an hour before.
