Opening: Viewable any time
The poet and artist William Blake spent some of his most productive years in Lambeth, in a house on Hercules Road, where he wrote Songs of Experience and printed his strange and beautiful illuminated books. He claimed to see angels and visions in the area, and the surrounding streets are now dotted with tributes to him.
The original house is long gone, but a plaque and nearby mosaics mark his time here, part of a small Blake trail through the railway arches. It is free to follow, a quiet pilgrimage for anyone who loves his fierce, dreamlike vision of London and beyond.
Getting there: Around Hercules Road in Lambeth, a short walk from Lambeth North station.
Best time to go: Daytime, easily paired with the nearby Blake mosaics.
Insider tip: Combine it with the free William Blake mosaics under the nearby railway arches for a proper mini-pilgrimage. The Lambeth streets he walked are still here, just minutes from the South Bank.
