William Morris Gallery
morris, free, in his own house
The only public gallery devoted to William Morris, free, in his grand childhood home on the edge of a Walthamstow park. Wallpaper, textiles and radical ideas.
Free to visit · Walthamstow · Walthamstow Central · E17 4PP
Opening: Wed–Sun 10am–5pm · closed Mon & Tue
William Morris, the designer whose wallpapers and fabrics still fill the country's homes, grew up in a handsome Georgian house on the edge of Walthamstow. That house is now the only public gallery devoted to him, and it is completely free.
Inside you get the full sweep of the man, the famous patterns and printing blocks, the stained glass and tapestries, but also the firebrand socialist who wanted beauty and good work for everyone, not just the rich. It is beautifully done and surprisingly moving for a free local museum at the end of the Victoria line.
The house sits in Lloyd Park, with a moat, a garden and a cafe, so you can make a proper half day of it without spending much. It is the sort of place that makes you wonder why you ever paid for a gallery.
Getting there: A walk or short bus up Forest Road from Walthamstow Central at the end of the Victoria line.
Best time to go: A dry weekend so you get the surrounding Lloyd Park too. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan around that.
Insider tip: It is the perfect rainy-day-into-sunshine trip. Do the free gallery while the weather is bad, then walk straight out into Lloyd Park when it clears. The cafe in the old coach house is good value if you need feeding.
