Ziggy Stardust Plaque
where ziggy stardust was born
A plaque in a quiet West End alley marking the exact doorway where David Bowie shot the cover of Ziggy Stardust.
Free to visit · Soho · Piccadilly Circus · W1B 4BU
Opening: Viewable any time
Tucked just off the bustle of Regent Street, the quiet cul-de-sac of Heddon Street is hallowed ground for music fans. It was here, in 1972, that David Bowie posed under a streetlamp for the cover of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, one of the most influential albums ever made, and Britain's first official plaque to a fictional character now marks the spot.
The original furrier's sign and the phone box from the back cover are long gone, but the doorway remains recognisable. It is free to find, a small place of pilgrimage where you can stand exactly where Ziggy Stardust first stepped into the world.
Getting there: In Heddon Street just off Regent Street, a couple of minutes from Piccadilly Circus.
Best time to go: Daytime to match the album-cover doorway, or after dark for the moodier original look.
Insider tip: Find the plaque honouring Ziggy Stardust, unusual for commemorating a character rather than a person. Stand at the doorway, the famous lamp post is gone, but fans still pose on the exact spot of the cover shoot.
