The lowdown
More than 1,000 fountains dance in choreographed patterns across Granary Square, each one individually controlled and lit, and you can run straight through them for free. King's Cross runs them daily during daylight hours, sometimes on quieter low-level or pooling settings, and the display gets livelier as the day goes on. On a hot day the same jets double as London's best free splash pad.
The square opens onto the Regent's Canal with broad steps down to the water, so you can buy a coffee or just sit on the terraces and watch the boats and the spray. The fountains' lighting, by Speirs + Major, makes the square a striking spot as the light fades.
Practical bits: there is no ticket, no booking and no charge. Bring a towel and a change of clothes if kids are going in, and expect the display to vary, so on some visits the jets will be low or pooling rather than full height.
