The lowdown

Horizon 22 is London's highest free viewing platform, on the 58th floor of 22 Bishopsgate, the tallest building in the City. Going up costs nothing, but everyone, children included, needs a free e-ticket with a QR code, and horizon22.co.uk is the only official place to book. Sites charging for Horizon 22 tickets are not authorised and their tickets will not get you in.

The whole floor is given over to the view, floor-to-ceiling glass looking down on the Gherkin, the Walkie Talkie and the Cheesegrater below you, the river snaking off towards Canary Wharf and the whole sprawl of London laid out flat. On a clear day you can see for miles.

Your ticket gives you an arrival time and once you are up there is no time limit. Bags go through airport-style screening and anything bigger than 58 x 45 x 25cm is not allowed in, with no lockers, so travel light. Selfie sticks, tripods and alcohol are banned, the lead guest may be asked for photo ID and under 16s need an adult with them. There are toilets on Level 58 and a small café up top for coffee and snacks.

No ticket? You can book a walk-in on the day with the QR code by the entrance, but only when there is space, so book ahead if the day matters. The building is step-free from the Bishopsgate entrance, assistance dogs are welcome and anyone who needs support can choose a special assistance ticket. The only paid extras are optional, a £5 audio-visual Guide to the View and ticketed early, late and seasonal experiences.
